Student Government Association
President’s Message
Freshmen year, I never thought I’d find myself in this position but I feel so
honored to have made it this far.
In high school, I was always too shy to run for student government positions;
however, when I arrived to Sweet Briar College my freshman year, I found that I
did have the confidence needed to step out of my comfort zone and take on the
responsibilities of being a student leader. Although I was somewhat unsure of
what those responsibilities entailed, I felt safe in knowing that I had the support
of my classmates and the guidance of the administration and staff. If there has
been one great thing I’ve learned since being at Sweet Briar, it’s that I should
never be afraid to ask for help.
My goal is to provide my classmates with the resources needed to pursue goals
and opportunities on and off campus. Whether the resources happen to be
guidance to professors, administrators or even fellow students, I want everyone
to know that there are so many people here at Sweet Briar who are willing to
help and to answer questions if they would ask.
I hope to spread the confidence I have found from the three years I’ve spent at
Sweet Briar and share it with all of you. Don’t let things like shyness or fear of
rejection get in your way, because there are countless of opportunities here at
Sweet Briar that are just waiting to be filled. Now is the time to step out of your
comfort zone and throw yourself into a position you never thought you’d have
the courage to do. Remember that you are your biggest resource, so take
advantage of what you have to offer and don’t deprive our campus of your
unique talents and abilities.
As your student body President, I ask you to put your trust in the Student
Government Association. Know that we are your eyes and ears, your
representatives and most of all, your friends. We are here to support you and to
ensure that you get the Sweet Briar education you hoped for. We invite you to
step out of your comfort zone and share your ideas and enthusiasm with us in
student government meetings.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email me at
Yours,
Madeline Hodges ’13
SGA President
