Mobile Data Services<br />

Smartphone use in the Philippines is on a steady rise<br />

especially with the availability of affordably-priced devices,<br />

giving subscribers full access to internet surfing on their<br />

mobile phones anytime, anyw<strong>here</strong>.<br />

Keeping up with this growing demand, more mobile internet<br />

services were offered by Globe, led by SuperFB for Globe<br />

subscribers and AstigFB for the TM subscribers. Subscribers<br />

are now able to enjoy unlimited mobile Facebook access<br />

for as low ₱10 for one day or up to 30 days for ₱199. For<br />

subscribers who want to do more than just Facebook, Surf<br />

Bundles were made available so they can enjoy 1-day<br />

unlimited access to Facebook and other favorite social sites<br />

such as Twitter, Multiply, Yahoo! Mail, GMail, or YouTube.<br />

For subscribers who want to explore the internet and its<br />

wonders with an affordable, worry-free mobile browsing<br />

experience, Globe PowerSurf empowers them to do just that.<br />

Globe Postpaid subscribers can choose from ₱99 for 50MB<br />

surfing or get up to 1GB surfing for 30 days for ₱499. All<br />

Postpaid subscribers registered to PowerSurf are given a no<br />

bill shock guarantee. As long as they stay subscribed to the<br />

service, they will not be charged higher than ₱999 for mobile<br />

browsing even if they exceed their megabyte (MB) allocation.<br />

Prepaid subscribers, on the other hand, can surf for as low<br />

as ₱15 for one day with 20MB surfing or get up to 1GB for 30<br />

days for just ₱499.<br />

Aside from innovative mobile data offers, subscribers are<br />

also provided with excellent service delivery and customer<br />

experience. They can easily access all offers by registering<br />

through text or dialing *143# from their mobile phones for<br />

free.<br />

In October 2012, Globe and Google also introduced the<br />

pioneering Google Freezone. A first in the world, Google<br />

Freezone gives Globe Prepaid and TM subscribers access to<br />

GMail, Google Search and Google+ for free via libre.ph. To<br />

start using Google Freezone, subscribers can simply register<br />

by texting LIBRE to 8888 or visit http://libre.ph through their<br />

mobile phones.<br />

Ending the year with another innovation, Globe Telecom<br />

unveiled its own roster of Globe Mobile Applications –<br />

GMESSAGE, GMOVIES, GSERVICES and GCCASH,<br />

designed to give subscribers with unique, relevant, and<br />

delightful mobile content that will add value to today’s fastpaced<br />

lifestyle.<br />

GMESSAGE, the first in Asia, is a mobile messaging<br />

application that enables users to send and receive free and<br />

unlimited messages, share photos, videos and audio files with<br />

other GMESSAGE users anyw<strong>here</strong> in the world. The app also<br />

allows users to send messages to other mobile subscribers<br />

for only ₱0.15 per message. GMOVIES is a one-stop mobile<br />

application for all movie needs such as checking movie<br />

schedules and reviews, booking and reserving seats, and<br />

buying movie tickets from the mobile phone. GSERVICES is<br />

an account management app that allows subscribers to check<br />

their prepaid load or outstanding postpaid balance, register to<br />

promos, check rewards points, redeem rewards and request<br />

for bill reprints. GCASH empowers subscribers to buy prepaid<br />

load anytime and anyw<strong>here</strong> with a 10% rebate, pay bills,<br />

send money to family and friends via their mobile or through<br />

Facebook, and send donations without having to memorize<br />

keywords or access numbers.<br />

Globe Labs<br />

To further sustain the growing mobile application industry and<br />

strengthen its confidence in the talent of every Filipino, Globe<br />

brought to life Globe Labs. Globe Labs is a fast-growing<br />

developer community striving towards creating revolutionary<br />

mobile innovations. Through this group, aspiring and<br />

experienced developers will have the opportunity and<br />

means to further develop their ideas and talents on mobile<br />

applications and be able to promote these inventions on a<br />

greater scale.<br />

With Globe Labs, knowledge and skills enhancement<br />

are provided through regular trainings to introduce new<br />

technologies and platforms to help developers keep their<br />

competitive edge. Other support mechanisms such as tools,<br />

resources, facilities and enablers which pave the way for<br />

application development are included once registration is<br />

completed by every member. This pool of developers is<br />

assisted by Globe Labs in commercializing and monetizing<br />

their developed applications.<br />

Everyone interested can join Globe Labs even without any<br />

background on information technology (IT) or computer<br />

software. The key is every individual’s passion on building<br />

and innovating applications for tech-savvy mobile users.<br />

Globe Labs also has an existing partnership with the<br />

University of San Jose – Recoletos (USJR) in Cebu<br />

City for idea exchange and integration to the curriculum<br />

through capacity building, research, and mobile application<br />

development. As a result, Globe Labs provides annual<br />

training and technical support for graduating students and<br />

faculty members of USJR and has commissioned Orange &<br />

Bronze Software Labs, to design a mobile app development<br />

course for the school.<br />

A similar activity co-presented by Google Developers<br />

Group – Philippines (GDG-PH) was held in Cebu and<br />

Bacolod to bring the latest technologies through the first<br />

GDG DevFest in the Visayas region. In the said event,<br />

tech enthusiasts were able to learn more about Google<br />

technologies and products and at the same time interact<br />

with local product developers. HTML5, Android development<br />

& Google developer tools, Google Apps, Maps & locationbased<br />

services were also tackled. For the business minded<br />

people, the focus was on Google AdSense and Social Media<br />

Marketing.<br />

Another partnership with GDG and World Bank was entered<br />

by Globe Labs for the staging of the Sanitation Hackathon<br />

in December. The SanHack targeted developers who could<br />

create apps to address the global problem of providing clean<br />

toilets and drinking water.<br />

Other initiatives supported by Globe Labs include<br />

PinoyBBDev and 2nd PinoyBBDev Hackathon in August<br />

and Blackberry® Jam Manila in October. Also, Globe Labs<br />

together with Microsoft Philippines and Nokia Philippines,<br />

organized the first ever Windows Phone 8 Developer Day in<br />

November.<br />

Globe Labs will continue to organize events that support<br />

local tech enthusiasts to further foster innovation and<br />

idea generation that will help boost the country’s mobile<br />

technology scene. So far, Globe Labs community has over<br />

4,000 members composed of IT professionals, programmers,<br />

designers, analysts and system integrators and also students<br />

and business managers.<br />

In 2012, various events were organized by Globe Labs<br />

to fully help its community understand and produce more<br />

relevant ideas and innovations. For instance, Globe<br />

Labs Developers Day focused on the theme – “Apps<br />

Developments using Facebook APIs”. The sessions gave an<br />

overview and walkthrough of Facebook’s mobile platform,<br />

Open Graph API, App and Games Development and<br />

the Facebook App Center. Facebook Head of Developer<br />

Advocacy, Mr. James Pearce was present to grace the event<br />

which was held in Makati City.<br />
