SECTION 8<br />

SPECIAL <strong>REGULATIONS</strong><br />

8.6.5.1 All signs shall comply with applicable provisions of the State of Connecticut<br />

Building Code.<br />

8.6.5.2 Except for open and temporary signs conforming in all respects with the<br />

requirements of this ordinance, all signs shall be constructed of permanent<br />

materials and shall be permanently attached to the ground, a building, or<br />

another structure by direct attachment to a rigid wall, frame, or structure.<br />

8.6.5.3 All signs shall be maintained in good structural condition, in compliance with all<br />

building and electrical codes, and in conformance with this code, at all times.<br />

8.6.6 DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE <strong>OF</strong> SIGNS:<br />

8.6.6.1 All signs shall be designed and constructed safely to support their weight and<br />

to withstand wind and other stress. Signs shall be constructed in accordance<br />

with the requirements of the State of Connecticut Basic Building Code.<br />

8.6.6.2 All signs shall be kept and maintained in safe, neat and orderly condition and<br />

appearance and shall be repainted or otherwise maintained periodically to<br />

prevent corrosion or deterioration. The owner of the sign shall be responsible<br />

for providing such maintenance. For freestanding signs, maintenance shall<br />

also require that the ground area for a distance of not less than ten (10) feet in<br />

all directions be kept free and clear of weeds, trash and other debris. In the<br />

event a sign is not maintained, in a safe, neat, and orderly condition by the<br />

owner of the sign; the owner of the premises upon which such sign is<br />

displayed shall be liable for such maintenance.<br />

8.6.6.3 Whenever any business, service or other use moves from premises, or for any<br />

other reason a sign is not applicable to the premises, such sign will be<br />

considered abandoned. All abandoned signs shall be removed from such<br />

premises within ten (10) days after the date of such abandonment. In the<br />

event that such sign is not removed within such ten days, the owner of the<br />

premises shall be liable for such removal.<br />

8.6.7 SIGNS IN THE PUBLIC RIGHT <strong>OF</strong> WAY<br />

No signs shall be allowed in the public right of way, except for the following:<br />

8.6.7.1 Public signs erected by or on behalf of a governmental body to post notices,<br />

identify public property, convey public information, and direct or regulate<br />

pedestrian or vehicular traffic; Bus stop signs erected by a public transit<br />

company.<br />

8.6.7.2 Informational signs of a public utility regarding its poles, lines, pipes, or<br />

facilities.<br />
