COUNCIL 24/04/2013 ITEM 12.1 ATTACHMENT A COASTAL AND FORESHORE FACILITIES ASSET MANAGEMENT AND EXPANSION PLAN 4.6 Meelup Regional Park Precinct The Meelup Precinct is the first priority for the City of Busselton in terms of capital works and infrastructure upgrades. Meelup Beach is classified as a major coastal node and the other tourist areas within the Park are classified as regional coastal nodes due to the large proportion of visitors from areas outside the City of Busselton. Meelup Regional Park is an A Class Reserve vested in the City of Busselton with the gazette purpose of conservation and recreation. The Park extends along the coastline for 11.5 kilometres from Dunsborough to Bunker Bay, and the eastern side of Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. Meelup Regional Park lies within the Busselton-Augusta ‘biodiversity hotspot’, the only in Australia that is recognised internationally. A biodiversity hotspot is an area rich in plant and animal species, particularly high in endemism and under pressure from a variety of threats. The park’s size and relatively pristine condition of much of the vegetation means that it has both local and international conservation significance. The Aboriginals living in the area are Noongars of the Wardandi people. They live in the coastal region from Busselton to Augusta and relate strongly to the limestone coast and cave region, believing the spirits of their people live within the caves. It is know they camped on the freshwater lagoon above Meelup Beach. Its coastline is rare in Western Australia because it faces north east. It is therefore sheltered from the prevailing strong salt bearing south westerly winds, and so, in many places, tall trees and dense vegetation grows down to the waters edge. Public participation is inherent in the management of Meelup which is by community based Committee. The Park is managed by a City appointed Committee called the Meelup Regional Park Management Committee. Strategic goals regarding integration of management include develop and maintain integrated and coordinated management arrangements between the participating Park managers and government authorities. Natural Environment Values The Park has a unique ecology, including the Meelup Granite threatened ecological community and high biodiversity, with rare and endangered species including some of the oldest plants in the world. For this reason the Park has high conservation significance and is arguably worthy of recognition in this regard on an international level. The Park has high conservation value for fauna because of the diversity of species present, the presence of rare and interesting species and the limited number of introduced species.
