Ubuntu FAQs Why Ubuntu? Pano Logic evaluated several options for the underlying OS for Pano Controller for Cloud. Ubuntu was the best overall. Because Pano Controller for Cloud is an appliance, users will not run other software or applications on the unit. Thus, compatibility with random thrid-party applications is not a design requirement. Why can’t I use a newer version of Ubuntu? Because Pano Logic has tested this one and detemined that it meets the requirements and is stable. While newer versions of Ubunti may have specific features useful for some users, the Pano Controller for Cloud is a dedicated appliance, not a general-purpose server. LTS means Long Term Support. Ubuntu LTS releases get technical support from Ubuntu far longer than other releases - five full years. Thus you are assured that you won’t be caught up in frequent upgrades or patches. Pano Controller for Cloud is, and will remain, a stable appliance in support of your users. Ubuntu says that LTS will: • Be enterprise-focused: Ubuntuis targeting server installations, where users is risk-averse. • Be compatible with new hardware: Ubuntu will make point releases throughout the development cycle to provide functional support for new server and desktop hardware. • Be more tested: Ubuntu will shorten the development window and extend the beta cycle to allow for more testing and bug fixing.
