Outreach to University of Puerto Rico TeraGrid conducted a one day outreach session for over 50 faculty and students at the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras on December 8 and the University of Puerto at Mayaguez on December 9, 2010. The participants were provided with hands-on access to TeraGrid systems (Purdue’s Steele and PSC’s Pople) to learn how to submit and run parallel jobs. Stefano Leonardi, professor at University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, helped to <strong>org</strong>anize the visit. Leonardi has worked at the Sapienza University of Rome, Max Planck Institute, Saarbreucken, Germany, and at Carnegie Mellon and Berkeley Universities in the US. Leonardi said, “My wife and I moved to Puerto Rico about two years ago because we feel it is as close to Paradise as one can get—unless you rely on supercomputing to do your work. If it weren’t for TeraGrid, there is no way I could conduct my research.” Participants have requested accounts on TeraGrid subsequent to the visit. Supercomputing’10—November 12-18, New Orleans, LA Members of the ER team volunteered to assist with TeraGrid’s presence in the RP booths and in the TeraGrid booth. About 1000 Science and EOT Highlights documents and other TeraGrid communication collateral were disseminated. We distributed about 1000 orange petaflops (flipflops) that were left-over from the TeraGrid’10 Conference. 118
The TeraGrid booth showcased group photos from TeraGrid outreach events including the EXPO in DC and the EU-US Summer Schools. Leake and Hunt developed an engagement activity among the TG booths to showcase the Campus Champion Program. The theme “Embrace the Future with a Campus Champion” identified champions as important team members for expanding and supporting the TeraGrid community. Nineteen “trading” cards featured photographs of the champions and information about TeraGrid’s transition to XD.
