Leake shopped locally for Mardi-Gras themed decorative elements to give the booth a regional flavor. Feather boas, beads, and fragrant floral arrangements echoed the colors from the scientific images in the booth petaflops, and brochures. After the conference, the floral arrangements and decorative objects were donated to a local nursing home. The arrangements, showcasing huge stargazer lilies, were still fresh and beautiful in the nursing home for many more days. TeraGrid’11 Conference, Salt Lake City Utah, July 18-24, 2011 ER and EOT personnel are instrumental in the initial planning for the 2011 conference. Trish Barker (NCSA) is communication committee chair. Bill Bell (NCSA) is involved as deputy chair. Many other ER team members serve on various committees. Diane Baxter (SDSC) and Pallavi Ishwad (PSC) are EOT track chair. Laura McGinnis (PSC) is the lead for the Student Program and is coordinating with OSG on a Summer School for students. Scott Lathrop (UChicago) is the chair for BOFs. 10.2 EOT Impact Stories Indiana IU event to help Indiana Business Leaders get their heads in the clouds (IU News release, CI Newsletter, multiple local and regional media outlets in Indiana) Turn on any technology-related news program or radio show these days and you're likely to hear someone mention cloud computing. "Cloud" has become a hot technology buzzword, in part due to the substantial promise cloud applications hold for business and industry. To help leaders from corporations and small businesses begin to realize this potential, the Pervasive Technology Institute at Indiana University hosted an educational seminar discussing how cloud technologies are providing access to greater computational power at a lower cost. World cloud computing leaders convene at IU-hosted conference (HPC Wire, SC Online, IU News release, a number of national and regional outlets) (also video from from the conference available online) The hot technology buzzword, "cloud," describes Internet-accessible infrastructure -- such as data storage and computing hardware -- that is hidden from users. Top cloud computing researchers and industry leaders from around the globe are gathering in Indianapolis this week to discuss the latest research and the future of this powerful emerging discipline. The IEEE 2nd International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science (CloudCom 2010) took place from Tuesday, November 30 through Friday, December 3 at University Place Conference Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). This year's hosts are the Pervasive Technology Institute at Indiana University and the IU School of Informatics and Computing. The conference included a number of talks on TeraGrid related technologies and services. SDSC “Grand Challenges in Data-Intensive Discovery” was the focus of a conference at SDSC on October 26-28, 2010. An element of SDSC’s TeraGrid outreach program associated with the new Gordon Track 2D system, the conference provided an opportunity for attendees to share their expertise while exchanging ideas about the computational challenges and concerns common to data-intensive problems. Presenters from a broad representation of disciplines allowed participants to understand some of their shared computational challenges. A small sampling of attendee responses to follow-up evaluation gives an indication of the conference’s success. A number of collaborations resulted from this conference. It was amazing to see how common the data challenge problems are. It was also interesting to see how different fields have come up with similar solutions independently. This clearly points to an urgent need for multidisciplinary efforts. I wanted to learn about the characteristics and the needs of data intensive applications; how they are matched by existing systems, and how future systems could be built to meet these applications’ needs. The conference had a good balance of technical and high level talks. I wanted to learn from other researchers in different fields - especially Social Science & Humanities - about their work with large data sets. There are commonalities with data searching tools in neuroscience and archaeology. This was interesting to see. 121
