John Cobb presented the capstone talk at the NOBUGS 2010 conference describing the NSTG
activities and integration with SNS as a “Best practice” for the integration of national
cyberinfrastructure with an experimental user facility. Cobb was also on the conference
organizing committee.
GISolve.
This team continues to explore new applications and communities for high performance
computing. Recent interactions have been with the land use science community. Future plans
include working with a public health community. Several publications from the group are listed
in this report’s appendices.
CCSM/ESG.
The joint team is making progress as planned in all three major project areas. Next quarter,
overarching goals include completion of work on software licensing and the completion of phase
I of the prototype CESM1 gateway. This will support running CESM1 simulations on Steele,
automatic production of attributes, and automatic publishing of model output to ESG.
Task 1 is to provide interfaces for remote model run invocation. CESM1 is being tested on Steele
at Purdue. The team has partially resolved the MPI communication problem, but there are still
some problems scaling up. CESM-WS web service interfaces have been deployed to a production
server, including bug fixes and performance improvements. Incremental changes support new
requirements from the CESM1 gateway client. The CESM1 gateway directly invokes the CESM-
WS interfaces and currently supports case creation/configuration/submission and status tracking
Next quarter the team will address the CESM1 scaling issues, complete model validation and add
support for data access and publishing of model output from the prototype CESM1 gateway to
ESG.
Task 2 is to publish Purdue CCSM archive data to ESG. Memory of the Purdue ESG data node
has been upgraded. The FUSE interface to the ESG test gateway has been tested and successfully
published (manually) an iRODS CCSM3 data collection through this interface.
Next quarter the team will automate publishing of model output from the CESM1 gateway to
ESG test gateway.
Task 3 is to collect and publish CESM1 model data and metadata back to ESG. Work continues
on instrumenting CESM such that it can produce a METAFOR-compliant CIM document
(WCRP/CMIP5 metadata). Support was added for outputting ESMF attributes from the CESM
components and driver, and the attribute suite was further analyzed. Tested the system, and
provided code back to CESM team for integration. The team completed development of an initial
version of an ATOM feed for ingesting CIM documents into ESG. Integration of the feed was
tested with ESG, publishing model metadata back into it.
Next quarter the team plans to review metadata content and completeness by Purdue, add code to
CESM to automatically set attributes from within CESM code, integrate as CESM tagged release,
and test at Purdue. Packaging of the ATOM feed will be refined and released in a V1.0.0 open
source version. Basic installation and usage documentation will be completed and deployed at
Purdue.
Purdue Environmental Data Portal.
The Environmental Data Portal has integrated three new data sets, the Indiana precipitation
dataset, St. Joseph watershed water quality and stream flow data and a historical time series of
average precipitation and temperature data for Midwest.
