Chapter 4 • Socio-Cultural Findings and Analysis 4.8. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NEEDS During the first group meeting held in the community,- on 12 February 1999, a development needs identification and prioritisation session was undertaken. The results of this session -are presented below, together with the perceptions gathered from individuals and during the group meetings that were held in the community. The results reflect opinions about what Shewula's most pressing development needs are, as well as a wish list of possible developments which could occur some time in the future. It should be borne in mind that the development needs identified here could change over time, and that the prioritisation of these was only done with the help of those who attended the initial meeting or were contacted during the research. It is therefore a snapshot in time, and further research is required to determine if priorities for development have changed over time. 4.8.1. Needs identified During the initial workshop, the following categories were identified as opportunities for future development and community spending: Water Churches Electricity & Telephones Tractors Roads Beekeeping Schools Workshops and training Clinics Security Markets Bursaries / Study Warehouses Dipping Tanks The destitute / old aged / widows Silos Loan Schemes Home Economics / Nutrition To this list the following may also be added, since although they were not initially identified, they were mentioned during further research activities: Toilets A mortuary A fence long the eastern border with Mozambique Agricultural assistance Curio shops / stalls / handicraft markets A chemist Soccer team sponsorship Purchase of game for the Shewula reserve Fencing for the Shewula reserve Table 4.6 ranks the development needs mentioned above. The ranking is based on the significance rating allocated to each need during a group focus session at the initial meeting (i.e. high, medium or low) and the number of times each was mentioned during subsequent interactions with the community (group meetings, oneon-one interviews etc.) The table also includes the primary data of the significance rating attached to the need at the introductory workshop by the different focus groups, together with an indication of the frequency with which each need was mentioned. 84
