Commission on EMU, <strong>and</strong> in 2002–2007 he served in the European<br />

Economic Advisory Group at CESifo.<br />

Sixten Korkman, pol.dr., is since 2005 managing director of the Research<br />

Institute of the Finnish Economy (ETLA) <strong>and</strong> the Finnish Business <strong>and</strong><br />

Policy Forum EVA. He has previously served as Head of Office at the Bank<br />

of Finl<strong>and</strong> (1983–1988), as Director General in the Ministry of Finance<br />

in Finl<strong>and</strong> (1989–2005), <strong>and</strong> as Director General in the secretariat of<br />

the Council of Ministers in the European Union (1995–2005). He has<br />

written articles on macroeconomic policy issues <strong>and</strong> a book on economic<br />

policies in the European Union.<br />

Hans Tson Söderström was from 1970 until 1984 Research Fellow, Senior<br />

Fellow <strong>and</strong> finally Deputy Director at the Institute for International<br />

Economic Studies at Stockholm University. Between 1985 <strong>and</strong> 2002 he<br />

served as President <strong>and</strong> CEO of SNS – the Swedish Center for Business<br />

<strong>and</strong> Policy Studies. Since 1992 Hans Tson Söderström has served part<br />

time as Adjunct Professor of macroeconomic analysis <strong>and</strong> policy in the<br />

Department of Economics at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE).<br />

In 2004 he returned full time to SSE to become President <strong>and</strong> CEO of<br />

the school’s executive education branch. Professor Söderström’s main<br />

area of research is macroeconomic policies in small open economies. He<br />

has produced a number of scientific papers <strong>and</strong> textbooks in the area<br />

<strong>and</strong> has also served widely as policy advisor. Beween 1985 <strong>and</strong> 1995 he<br />

was chairman of the SNS Economic Policy Group with annual reports<br />

on Swedish economic policy.<br />

Juhana Vartiainen, pol.dr., leads the Research Division at the National<br />

Institute for Economic Research (Konjunkturinstitutet), Stockholm <strong>and</strong><br />

is a part time associate professor (docent) at Åbo Akademi, Finl<strong>and</strong>. In<br />

2003–2005 he was the director <strong>and</strong> executive officer of the Trade Union<br />

Foundation for Economic Research, Stockholm. Juhana Vartiainen has<br />

been engaged in macroeconomic research, including the history of macroeconomic<br />

policy in Finl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Sweden, as well as microeconometric<br />

studies of the labour market, the gender wage gap <strong>and</strong> the economics of<br />

collective wage agreements in the <strong>Nordic</strong> countries.
