Appendix C: Global <strong>and</strong> local plant community descriptions<br />

Achnatherum hymenoides, Chamaesyce fendleri, Cryptantha crassisepala, Ephedra torreyana,<br />

Eriogonum leptocladon, Ipomopsis longiflora, Machaeranthera canescens, Phacelia crenulata,<br />

Plantago patagonica, Senecio spartioides, Stephanomeria exigua, <strong>and</strong> Yucca angustissima. The<br />

introduced annual grass Bromus tectorum is common in some st<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Petrified Forest National Park. Four relevés were classified as Artemisia filifolia / Bouteloua<br />

eriopoda Shrubl<strong>and</strong>, with total vegetation cover ranging from 28-37% (average 34%). The vegetation<br />

cover consisted of a shrub stratum with 9-18% cover (average 13%) <strong>and</strong> an herbaceous<br />

stratum with 16-28% cover (average 22%). The species diversity ranged from 26 <strong>and</strong> 45 species<br />

(average 34 species). The shrub layer was dominated by Artemisia filifolia <strong>and</strong> ranged from<br />

2 <strong>and</strong> 6% cover (average 4%). The herbaceous layer was dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda,<br />

ranging between 0.5 <strong>and</strong> 5% cover (average 4%) <strong>and</strong> Bouteloua gracilis, ranging between 2 <strong>and</strong><br />

5% cover (average 4%).<br />
