What <strong>is</strong> the Holy Spirit acc<strong>or</strong>ding to their concept? Whatevidence do they have f<strong>or</strong> considering him as a God? When did thathappen?In 381 C.E, by the <strong>or</strong>der of the Emper<strong>or</strong> Tedious, the Council ofConstantinople f<strong>or</strong>med, to d<strong>is</strong>cuss B<strong>is</strong>hop Macedonius’ belief. Hedenied the divinity of the Holy Spirit; and he believed what the HolyBooks menti<strong>one</strong>d about him. He believed that, “The Holy Spirit <strong>is</strong> adivine w<strong>or</strong>k spread in the w<strong>or</strong>ld, not a divine person who <strong>is</strong> differentfrom the Father and the Son”, and, “He <strong>is</strong> like all the creations”, andhe saw him as a servant of the Son just like <strong>one</strong> of the angels.One hundred and fifty priests attended th<strong>is</strong> council. These priestsdecided to deprive Macedonius of h<strong>is</strong> office, and they made <strong>one</strong>imp<strong>or</strong>tant dec<strong>is</strong>ion never made by the church councils bef<strong>or</strong>e, whichwas deifying the Holy Spirit. They considered him as a complementto the Trinity. They said, “We have no other meaning f<strong>or</strong> the HolySpirit except the Spirit of God, God <strong>is</strong> nothing except h<strong>is</strong> life, andsaying that the Holy Spirit <strong>is</strong> a creation, <strong>is</strong> the same as saying thatGod <strong>is</strong> a creation.” 1Priest Yasin Mans<strong>or</strong> said, “The Holy Spirit <strong>is</strong> the eternal God, heex<strong>is</strong>ted bef<strong>or</strong>e the creation, and he <strong>is</strong> the creat<strong>or</strong> of everything, ableto do anything. He <strong>is</strong> present everywhere, and he <strong>is</strong> the everlastingand the unlimited”.He also said, “The Holy Spirit <strong>is</strong> the third hypostas<strong>is</strong> of the Trinity. He<strong>is</strong> not just a power <strong>or</strong> character<strong>is</strong>tic, but a real self, a living person,and a d<strong>is</strong>tinct divine being. He <strong>is</strong> not separate; he <strong>is</strong> a divine unitdifferent from the Father and the Son, but equal to them in powerand position, sharing with them the basic and the same divinity. 2Chr<strong>is</strong>tians refer to John’s Gospel when talking about the divinity ofthe Holy Spirit: “God <strong>is</strong> spirit” (John 4/24). They also believe thathe <strong>is</strong> the spirit that ex<strong>is</strong>ted from the beginning of creation, “In thebeginning, God created the heavens and the earth. TheSpirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”(Genes<strong>is</strong> 1/1-2).
