<str<strong>on</strong>g>Attacks</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Press</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong>edi<strong>to</strong>r and publisher of <strong>the</strong> Brooklyn-based weekly Haitian Times, wrote<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> CPJ Blog <strong>on</strong> February 1. But survey<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> landscape <strong>in</strong> Port-au-Pr<strong>in</strong>ce three weeks after <strong>the</strong> quake, Pierre-Pierre described large-scaledestructi<strong>on</strong> that had nearly silenced Haitian radio news, a situati<strong>on</strong> thatwould c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue for many m<strong>on</strong>ths.An excepti<strong>on</strong> was Signal FM, <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly stati<strong>on</strong> <strong>to</strong> c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uously broadcastdur<strong>in</strong>g and after <strong>the</strong> earthquake. The stati<strong>on</strong>’s transmissi<strong>on</strong> facilities,east of <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>in</strong> Péti<strong>on</strong>ville, withs<strong>to</strong>od <strong>the</strong> quake and <strong>the</strong> dozens oftremors that followed. As work resumed, stati<strong>on</strong> direc<strong>to</strong>rPatrick Moussignac said he hoped normalcy would return for traumatizedHaitians. For that reas<strong>on</strong>, he said, “Caraibes Mat<strong>in</strong>,” a satirical look atpolitical and social issues, was <strong>the</strong> first Radio Televisi<strong>on</strong> Caraibes program<strong>to</strong> go back <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> air. “The populati<strong>on</strong> needs <strong>the</strong>rapy, and we must learn <strong>to</strong>laugh aga<strong>in</strong>,” Moussignac <strong>to</strong>ld CPJ. Radio Televisi<strong>on</strong> Caraibes served <strong>the</strong>local populati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ways as well. The stati<strong>on</strong> made its genera<strong>to</strong>r available<strong>to</strong> local residents, for example, so <strong>the</strong>y could recharge <strong>the</strong>ir cell-ph<strong>on</strong>ebatteries, CPJ’s Chery reported. Hundreds of people <strong>to</strong>ok advantage of <strong>the</strong>offer, which enabled <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> communicate with <strong>the</strong>ir families.By late year, SOS Journalistes estimated that 97 percent of radio stati<strong>on</strong>shad resumed broadcast<strong>in</strong>g, although many operated under excepti<strong>on</strong>al98
