<str<strong>on</strong>g>Attacks</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Press</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong>analysisAs Bomb<strong>in</strong>gs Spread,Pakistan Was Deadliest Nati<strong>on</strong>Amid a rash of suicide attacks, Pakistan became <strong>the</strong> world’s deadliestcountry for <strong>the</strong> press <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong>, with at least eight journalists killed <strong>in</strong>c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong>ir work, c<strong>on</strong>stitut<strong>in</strong>g a significant porti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> worldwidedeath <strong>to</strong>ll.At least 44 journalists were killed around <strong>the</strong> world <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong>, with Iraq,Mexico, H<strong>on</strong>duras, and Ind<strong>on</strong>esia also rank<strong>in</strong>g high for journalism-relatedfatalities, CPJ’s analysis found. The worldwide <strong>to</strong>ll reflected a notable dropfrom 2009, when a massacre <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philipp<strong>in</strong>e prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Magu<strong>in</strong>danaodrove <strong>the</strong> number of work-related deaths <strong>to</strong> a record 72. CPJ is <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g31 o<strong>the</strong>r deaths <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong> <strong>to</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y were work-related.Internet-based journalists c<strong>on</strong>stitute an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g porti<strong>on</strong> of CPJ’sdeath <strong>to</strong>ll. At least six journalists who worked primarily <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e were killed<strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong>. Internet journalists rarely appeared <strong>in</strong> CPJ’s death <strong>to</strong>ll until 2008,when <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e reporters do<strong>in</strong>g fr<strong>on</strong>t-l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>vestigative work began <strong>to</strong> betargeted with violence.Murder was <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g cause of work-related deaths <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong>, as it hasbeen <strong>in</strong> past years. But murders composed about 60 percent of deaths <strong>in</strong><strong>2010</strong>, lower than <strong>the</strong> rate of 72 percent seen over <strong>the</strong> past two decades.Deaths <strong>in</strong> combat-related crossfire and <strong>in</strong> dangerous assignments suchas street protests c<strong>on</strong>stituted a larger porti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>2010</strong> <strong>to</strong>ll than usual.Suicide bomb<strong>in</strong>gs and crossfire <strong>in</strong> Pakistan, Afghanistan, Thailand, andSomalia accounted for <strong>the</strong> unusually high proporti<strong>on</strong>.Six of <strong>the</strong> eight fatalities <strong>in</strong> Pakistan were caused by suicide attacks orcrossfire dur<strong>in</strong>g militant strikes. On successive days <strong>in</strong> April, Samaa TVlost cameraman Malik Arif <strong>to</strong> a bomb<strong>in</strong>g at a Quetta hospital and corresp<strong>on</strong>dentAzamat Ali Bangash <strong>to</strong> a bomb attack target<strong>in</strong>g a refugeecamp near Orakzai. Suicide attacks were a scourge for <strong>the</strong> Pakistani pressthroughout <strong>the</strong> year.
