<str<strong>on</strong>g>Attacks</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Press</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong>journalists <strong>in</strong> Iran s<strong>in</strong>ce June 2009, CPJ research found. Yet a review of<strong>the</strong> journalists’ acti<strong>on</strong>s that led <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se charges and c<strong>on</strong>victi<strong>on</strong>s yieldsactivities such as expos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rape and <strong>to</strong>rture of pris<strong>on</strong>ers, report<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>street dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g critical clerics and political analysts,and cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> activities of <strong>the</strong> political oppositi<strong>on</strong>.Mohammad Davari, a recipient of CPJ’s <strong>2010</strong> Internati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>Press</strong>Freedom Award and edi<strong>to</strong>r-<strong>in</strong>-chief of <strong>the</strong> reformist news website SahamNews, was serv<strong>in</strong>g a five-year pris<strong>on</strong> sentence for document<strong>in</strong>g allegati<strong>on</strong>sof rape and <strong>to</strong>rture at <strong>the</strong> Kahrizak Detenti<strong>on</strong> Center. He was found guiltyof “mut<strong>in</strong>y with <strong>the</strong> purpose of disrupt<strong>in</strong>g nati<strong>on</strong>al security.” Renowned author,journalist, and human rights defender Emadedd<strong>in</strong> Baghi was deta<strong>in</strong>ed<strong>on</strong> security charges after <strong>the</strong> BBC rebroadcast a two-year-old <strong>in</strong>terview hehad c<strong>on</strong>ducted with Aya<strong>to</strong>llah Hosse<strong>in</strong>-Ali M<strong>on</strong>tazeri, a <strong>on</strong>ce-<strong>in</strong>fluentialcleric whose death <strong>in</strong> 2009 had galvanized government critics. Baghi, sentenced<strong>to</strong> six years impris<strong>on</strong>ment for that <strong>in</strong>terview, suffered severe healthproblems <strong>in</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>dy.“Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most urgent needs <strong>in</strong> Iranian society is transparency andaccountability. And <strong>the</strong> Iranian judiciary has, unfortunately, become a<strong>to</strong>ol <strong>to</strong> prevent journalists from provid<strong>in</strong>g those th<strong>in</strong>gs,” Hadi Ghaemi,direc<strong>to</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> Internati<strong>on</strong>al Campaign for Human Rights <strong>in</strong> Iran, <strong>to</strong>ld CPJ.“<strong>Journalists</strong> who press for accountability and transparency are rout<strong>in</strong>elyaccused of ‘act<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st nati<strong>on</strong>al security’ or ‘propaganda aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>regime.’”In Bahra<strong>in</strong>, a gag order prevents coverage ofa widespread crackdown.In Bahra<strong>in</strong>, authorities said <strong>the</strong>y were dismantl<strong>in</strong>g “a terrorist network”when <strong>the</strong>y arrested hundreds of people beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> August and c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>gthrough parliamentary electi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Oc<strong>to</strong>ber. Those deta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>cludedpolitical activists, human rights defenders, and at least two journalisticbloggers who had been critical of government policies that marg<strong>in</strong>alize <strong>the</strong>country’s Shiite majority.Independent scrut<strong>in</strong>y of <strong>the</strong> crackdown was made nearly impossibleby <strong>the</strong> government’s next acti<strong>on</strong>. Public Prosecu<strong>to</strong>r Ali al-Bua<strong>in</strong>a<strong>in</strong> issueda gag order barr<strong>in</strong>g news media from report<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> detenti<strong>on</strong>s. Adefense lawyer noted <strong>on</strong>e excepti<strong>on</strong>: The press could publish governmentstatements <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> case. The deta<strong>in</strong>ees, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g bloggers Ali Abdel Imamand Abduljalil Als<strong>in</strong>gace, were charged with numerous crimes, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g228
