Recipients have shownextraord<strong>in</strong>ary courage <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face of great risks, stand<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>to</strong> tyrantsand document<strong>in</strong>g events <strong>in</strong> dark corners of <strong>the</strong> world. Here are <strong>the</strong> <strong>2010</strong>awardees:Mohammad Davari, IranDavari, 36, edi<strong>to</strong>r-<strong>in</strong>-chief of <strong>the</strong> news website Saham News,exposed horrific abuse at <strong>the</strong> Kahrizak Detenti<strong>on</strong> Center,videotap<strong>in</strong>g statements from deta<strong>in</strong>ees who said <strong>the</strong>y hadbeen raped, abused, and <strong>to</strong>rtured.The center was closed <strong>in</strong> July 2009 amid public uproar,but by September of that year <strong>the</strong> coverage had landedDavari <strong>in</strong> Ev<strong>in</strong> Pris<strong>on</strong>. He is serv<strong>in</strong>g a five-year pris<strong>on</strong> termfor “mut<strong>in</strong>y aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> regime.”His mo<strong>the</strong>r has written <strong>to</strong> U.N. Secretary-General BanKi-mo<strong>on</strong> <strong>to</strong> say that her s<strong>on</strong> has himself been <strong>to</strong>rtured <strong>in</strong>cus<strong>to</strong>dy. In solitary c<strong>on</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ement, Davari was not allowedc<strong>on</strong>tact with his family for many m<strong>on</strong>ths.getty imagesThe journalist had served his country and paid a high price. As a youngstudent, Davari volunteered <strong>to</strong> fight <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iran-Iraq War, dur<strong>in</strong>g which hesuffered eye and leg <strong>in</strong>juries.410
