Officers harassed journalists work<strong>in</strong>g forAl-Jazeera, Dream TV, Al-Masry al-Youm, Nahdet Misr, and Al-Karamadur<strong>in</strong>g protests <strong>in</strong> Cairo organized by <strong>the</strong> April 6 Youth Movement,accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> news reports. Al-Jazeera corresp<strong>on</strong>dent Samir Amr <strong>to</strong>ld CPJthat “security officers surrounded us, seized our cameras, and ordered us<strong>to</strong> leave <strong>the</strong> scene.” Ibrahim Kamal Eldeen, a pho<strong>to</strong>grapher for Al-Masryal-Youm, <strong>to</strong>ld CPJ that two officers grabbed him by <strong>the</strong> neck and pushedhim violently. “I showed <strong>the</strong>m my journalist credentials,” he said, “but <strong>the</strong>y<strong>to</strong>ld me <strong>the</strong>y didn’t care.”IranDefy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> government susta<strong>in</strong>ed itswidespread crackdown <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> press, prosecut<strong>in</strong>g journalists arrested<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> aftermath of <strong>the</strong> disputed June 2009 presidential electi<strong>on</strong> and deta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gadditi<strong>on</strong>al critical reporters and edi<strong>to</strong>rs throughout <strong>2010</strong>. More than100 journalists <strong>in</strong> all had been deta<strong>in</strong>ed at various times s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> crackdownbegan, CPJ research showed, a campaign of <strong>in</strong>timidati<strong>on</strong> unparalleledworldwide <strong>in</strong> more than a decade. The repressi<strong>on</strong> came at a time ofgreat global significance that <strong>in</strong>cluded disputes over Iran’s nuclear programand tighten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al sancti<strong>on</strong>s.<strong>Journalists</strong> were repeatedly sentenced <strong>to</strong> harsh pris<strong>on</strong> terms—oftenof five or six years, but many of more than 10 years—<strong>on</strong> vague antistatecharges such as “propagat<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> regime.” News of <strong>the</strong>se casestrickled out <strong>in</strong> brief <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e reports; authorities often pursued <strong>the</strong> prosecuti<strong>on</strong>sunder cover of secrecy <strong>in</strong> closed courts, sometimes deny<strong>in</strong>g deta<strong>in</strong>eesaccess <strong>to</strong> counsel.
