<strong>Journalists</strong> <strong>in</strong> Pris<strong>on</strong>He was formally charged with “provid<strong>in</strong>g state secrets <strong>to</strong> foreigners”by send<strong>in</strong>g an e-mail <strong>on</strong> his Yahoo account <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S.-based edi<strong>to</strong>r of<strong>the</strong> website M<strong>in</strong>zhu Luntan (Democracy Forum). In an an<strong>on</strong>ymouse-mail sent several m<strong>on</strong>ths before his arrest, Shi transcribed his notesfrom local propaganda department <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>to</strong> his newspaper,which <strong>in</strong>cluded directives <strong>on</strong> coverage of <strong>the</strong> Falun G<strong>on</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> upcom<strong>in</strong>g15th anniversary of <strong>the</strong> military crackdown <strong>on</strong> dem<strong>on</strong>stra<strong>to</strong>rsat Tiananmen Square.The Nati<strong>on</strong>al Adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Protect</strong>i<strong>on</strong> of State Secrets retroactivelycertified <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tents of <strong>the</strong> e-mail as classified, <strong>the</strong> officialX<strong>in</strong>hua News Agency reported.On April 27, 2005, <strong>the</strong> Changsha Intermediate People’s Court foundShi guilty and sentenced him <strong>to</strong> a 10-year pris<strong>on</strong> term.
