<strong>Journalists</strong> Killed: Analysisjournalists dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year. CPJ c<strong>on</strong>firmed that three journalists were killed<strong>in</strong> direct relati<strong>on</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir work, and it c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigate <strong>the</strong> circumstancessurround<strong>in</strong>g seven o<strong>the</strong>r deaths. The victims <strong>in</strong>cluded Luis CarlosSantiago, a pho<strong>to</strong>grapher for <strong>the</strong> Ciudad Juárez newspaper El Diario whowas gunned down while <strong>on</strong> assignment. His murder prompted <strong>the</strong> paper<strong>to</strong> publish an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary edi<strong>to</strong>rial addressed directly <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> drug cartelsthat c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>the</strong> city. “What do you want from us?” <strong>the</strong> edi<strong>to</strong>rial asked <strong>in</strong> itsheadl<strong>in</strong>e, not<strong>in</strong>g later, “You are, at this time, <strong>the</strong> de fac<strong>to</strong> authorities.”About 90 percent of victims worldwide were local reporters cover<strong>in</strong>gissues that affected <strong>the</strong>ir communities. Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m was Sardasht Osman,an Iraqi reporter who was seized from a street <strong>in</strong> Arbil and <strong>the</strong>n murderedafter describ<strong>in</strong>g alleged corrupti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kurdistan Regi<strong>on</strong>al Government.N<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> 10 victims are local journalistscover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir communities.Five <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al journalists were killed <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong>ir work.Fabio Polenghi, an Italian freelance pho<strong>to</strong>grapher, and Hiro Muramo<strong>to</strong>,a Japanese cameraman for Reuters, were killed <strong>in</strong> crossfire between Thaisecurity forces and anti-government protesters. Founder of <strong>the</strong> pro-oppositi<strong>on</strong> news website Charter 97,he was found dead <strong>in</strong> his summer house outside M<strong>in</strong>sk. Authorities declared<strong>the</strong> death a suicide without address<strong>in</strong>g questi<strong>on</strong>s about <strong>the</strong> extensive<strong>in</strong>juries found <strong>on</strong> his body or <strong>the</strong> absence of a suicide note or motive.Charter 97, whose coverage was critical of <strong>the</strong> government, was <strong>the</strong> targe<strong>to</strong>f cyber-attacks and government raids, while its staffers endured repeateddeath threats.L<strong>on</strong>g-term CPJ research shows that about 90 percent of journalist murdersgo unsolved. In H<strong>on</strong>duras, a CPJ <strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong> found that authoritieshad been careless and <strong>in</strong>attentive <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g a str<strong>in</strong>g of n<strong>in</strong>e journalistmurders, at least three of which were work-related. Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> victims wasNahúm Palacios Arteaga, a provocative televisi<strong>on</strong> anchor who was ambushedby multiple gunmen outside his home. H<strong>on</strong>duran authorities c<strong>on</strong>ductedvirtually no <strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> aftermath, tak<strong>in</strong>g no pho<strong>to</strong>graphsand collect<strong>in</strong>g no evidence at <strong>the</strong> crime scene.
