<str<strong>on</strong>g>Attacks</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Press</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong>that <strong>the</strong> journalist had ordered her <strong>to</strong> ex<strong>to</strong>rt US$10,000 from a localbus<strong>in</strong>essman, accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> press reports and CPJ sources. Although<strong>the</strong> woman later withdrew her accusati<strong>on</strong>, say<strong>in</strong>g she was forced <strong>to</strong>make it, authorities did not release Saiid.In March 2009, prosecu<strong>to</strong>rs announced that new witnesses had comeforward <strong>to</strong> accuse Saiid of ex<strong>to</strong>rti<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent news websiteFerghana reported. Prosecu<strong>to</strong>rs also added a forgery charge based <strong>on</strong>purported statements from local farmers who alleged that Saiid hadused <strong>the</strong>ir signatures <strong>to</strong> create fraudulent court papers. Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>Ferghana, <strong>the</strong> farmers announced at Saiid’s trial that prosecu<strong>to</strong>rs hadforced <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> testify aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> journalist.Authorities failed <strong>to</strong> notify Saiid’s lawyer, Ruhidd<strong>in</strong> Komilov, of cour<strong>the</strong>ar<strong>in</strong>g dates, Komilov <strong>to</strong>ld CPJ. In July 2009, a Tailak District Courtjudge sentenced <strong>the</strong> journalist <strong>in</strong> a closed proceed<strong>in</strong>g without hisdefense lawyer, family, or <strong>the</strong> press <strong>in</strong> attendance. Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> pressreports and CPJ sources, Saiid was c<strong>on</strong>victed <strong>on</strong> all charges, handed a12-and-a-half-year pris<strong>on</strong> term, and transferred <strong>to</strong> a strict-security penalcol<strong>on</strong>y outside <strong>the</strong> city of Navoi <strong>in</strong> central Uzbekistan. The pris<strong>on</strong>is known for hold<strong>in</strong>g many political pris<strong>on</strong>ers.Before his impris<strong>on</strong>ment, Saiid had reported <strong>on</strong> official abusesaga<strong>in</strong>st farmers for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent regi<strong>on</strong>al news website Voice ofFreedom as well as for a number of local newspapers. A member of<strong>the</strong> Tashkent-based human rights group Ezgulik, Saiid had also helpedlocal farmers defend <strong>the</strong>ir rights <strong>in</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>al courts, local sources <strong>to</strong>ldCPJ.In November 2009, <strong>the</strong> journalist’s wife and 6-year-old daughterwere killed <strong>in</strong> a car accident while <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir way <strong>to</strong> visit him <strong>in</strong> pris<strong>on</strong>,Ferghana reported. Ezgulik appealed for Saiid’s release <strong>on</strong> humanitariangrounds, but <strong>the</strong> appeal was denied.
