From 2001 to 2003 the association “Childrenof Chernobyl in Belarus” (France), Mitterand’sFund (France), the Fund for Childrenof Chernobyl (Belgium), and the BELRAD Institutetreated 1,400 children (10 schools serving13 villages) in the Narovlyansky District,Gomel Province, in cycles in which the childrenreceived the pectin preparation Vitapectfive times over the course of a year. The resultsdemonstrated a three- to fivefold annualdecrease in radioactive contamination in childrenwho took the Vitapect. The results for onevillage can be seen in Figure 13.2.8. There was concern that pectin enterosorbentsremove not only Cs-137, but also vitalmicroelements. Special studies were carried outin 2003 and 2004 within the framework of theTABLE 13.3. Tests carried outin three Belarus sanatoriums (Timberland, SilverSprings, and Belarussian Girls) showed thatVitapect does not impair the positive balanceof the K, Zn, Cu, and Fe in children’s blood(Nesterenko et al., 2004).9. At the request of the “Chernobyl’s Children”NGOs initiatives in Germany, France,England, and Ireland, the BELRAD Instituteconducted measurements of Cs-137 in childrenbefore departure to and after their return fromhealth programs in these countries. Childrenwho only ate clean food during the 25–30 daysshowed a decrease in Cs-137 levels of some 20to 22%, whereas children who also received acourse of treatment with Vitapect showed aneven further decrease in the level of Cs-137 incorporation(Tables 13.3 and 13.4).Figure 13.2.
