Th e <strong>Mediation</strong> Support Project (MSP) was founded <strong>in</strong> 2005 as a jo<strong>in</strong>t venture between <strong>the</strong> Swiss <strong>Peace</strong><br />

Foundation (swisspeace) and <strong>the</strong> Center for Security Studies (CSS) at <strong>the</strong> ETH Zurich. Th e Swiss Federal<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Foreign Aff airs is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiator and ma<strong>in</strong> partner <strong>of</strong> MSP. MSP supports mediators and<br />

confl ict parties <strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g knowledge and skills for eff ective peace negotiations.<br />

Th e Center for Security Studies (CSS) at <strong>the</strong> ETH Zurich is a Swiss academic center <strong>of</strong> competence<br />

that specializes <strong>in</strong> research, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong>formation services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fi elds <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational relations and<br />

security policy. Th e CSS also acts as a consultant to various political bodies and <strong>the</strong> general public. Th e<br />

CSS is engaged <strong>in</strong> research projects with a number <strong>of</strong> Swiss and <strong>in</strong>ternational partners; focus<strong>in</strong>g on new<br />

risks, European and transatlantic security, strategy and doctr<strong>in</strong>e, state failure and state build<strong>in</strong>g, and Swiss<br />

foreign and security policy. Th e CSS runs <strong>the</strong> International Relations and Security Network (ISN), and <strong>in</strong><br />

cooperation with partner <strong>in</strong>stitutes manages <strong>the</strong> Comprehensive Risk Analysis and Management Network<br />

(CRN), <strong>the</strong> Parallel History Project on NATO and <strong>the</strong> Warsaw Pact (PHP), <strong>the</strong> Swiss Foreign and Security<br />

Policy Network (SSN), and <strong>the</strong> Russian and Eurasian Security(RES) Network. Th e CSS is a member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS), which is a jo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>itiative between <strong>the</strong> ETH<br />

Th e Swiss <strong>Peace</strong> Foundation (swisspeace) is a practice-oriented peace research <strong>in</strong>stitute <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong><br />

confl ict analysis and peacebuild<strong>in</strong>g. swisspeace researches <strong>the</strong> causes <strong>of</strong> wars and violent confl icts, develops<br />

tools for early recognition <strong>of</strong> tensions, and formulates confl ict mitigation and peacebuild<strong>in</strong>g strategies.<br />

swisspeace contributes to <strong>in</strong>formation exchange and network<strong>in</strong>g on current issues <strong>of</strong> peace and security<br />

policy through its analyses and reports as well as meet<strong>in</strong>gs and conferences. swisspeace was founded <strong>in</strong><br />

1988 as <strong>the</strong> Swiss <strong>Peace</strong> Foundation with <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependent peace research <strong>in</strong> Switzerland.<br />

Today swisspeace engages about 30 staff members. Its most important clients are <strong>the</strong> Swiss Federal<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Foreign Aff airs (DFA) and <strong>the</strong> Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), as well as national<br />
