Founded <strong>in</strong> 1876, Corriere della Sera is Italy’s bestsell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
daily newspaper. Corriere has ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed its <strong>in</strong>dependence<br />
throughout periods <strong>of</strong> political turmoil <strong>in</strong><br />
Italy. 10 Headquartered <strong>in</strong> Milan, <strong>the</strong> Corriere is owned by<br />
<strong>the</strong> RCS Group (Rizzoli Corriere della Sera), and has several<br />
shareholders, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Fiat and Mediobanca, two <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> biggest <strong>in</strong>dustrial firms <strong>in</strong> Italy. From <strong>the</strong> outset, Corriere<br />
established itself amongst its peers as an authority,<br />
“voic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial bourgeoisie from<br />
<strong>the</strong> North.” 11<br />

La Repubblica is an Italian daily newspaper founded <strong>in</strong><br />
1976 by <strong>the</strong> Roman journalist Eugenio Scalfari. The paper<br />
is <strong>the</strong> second most widely read and circulated paper<br />
<strong>in</strong> Italy, with an average daily circulation <strong>in</strong> 2010 <strong>of</strong><br />
448,544 copies. 12 The paper is owned by L’Espresso<br />
Group, headed by Carlo de Benedetti, and has both a<br />
common national edition, as well as regional editions <strong>in</strong><br />
Rome, Milan, Tur<strong>in</strong>, Bologna, Genoa, Florence, Naples,<br />
Palermo and Bari. 13 The paper has been known for its<br />
moderate left w<strong>in</strong>g tendencies; however it is impartial <strong>in</strong><br />
its criticism <strong>of</strong> Italian politics.<br />
