daily throughout <strong>the</strong> country. It is predom<strong>in</strong>antly considered<br />

<strong>the</strong> country's most prestigious publication. 4 Like Jornal<br />

de Noticias, this publication is also owned by Control<strong>in</strong>veste.<br />

FINDINGS:<br />

EU f<strong>in</strong>ancial aid to Portugal<br />

Due to <strong>the</strong> country’s economic difficulties and <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Eurocrisis, <strong>the</strong> topic <strong>of</strong> EU f<strong>in</strong>ancial support was a prevalent<br />

one <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Portuguese media throughout 2011.<br />

- Reports early on <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year <strong>in</strong>dicated that <strong>the</strong> EIB (European<br />

Investment Bank) stated its desire to help <strong>the</strong> flounder<strong>in</strong>g<br />

economies <strong>of</strong> Eurozone countries, <strong>of</strong> which Portugal<br />

was <strong>in</strong>cluded. 6<br />

- The EIB declared its <strong>in</strong>tention to aid Portugal <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

prevent from <strong>the</strong> country from fall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a recession, as<br />

was predicted if economic conditions <strong>in</strong> Portugal cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

to worsen. 7 Germany and France echoed this concern<br />

by <strong>in</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> country accept f<strong>in</strong>ancial aid as soon<br />

as possible. 8<br />

- In <strong>the</strong> later half <strong>of</strong> 2011, data from <strong>the</strong> Transatlantic<br />

Trends survey <strong>in</strong>dicated that majority <strong>of</strong> Portuguese citizens<br />

(58%) considered <strong>the</strong> euro ‘bad’ for <strong>the</strong> economy<br />

while 80% admitted <strong>the</strong>y had been affected by <strong>the</strong> economic<br />

crisis.<br />

- Despite <strong>the</strong>se trends <strong>the</strong> majority surveyed (68%) still<br />

supported <strong>the</strong> EU. 9 The data was released shortly before<br />

<strong>the</strong> EU allotted EUR 2 billion <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial aid to Portugal <strong>in</strong><br />

September 2011, meant to ease <strong>the</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> its<br />

debt and improve <strong>the</strong> liquidity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country. 10 The Eurozone<br />

countries expressed confidence <strong>in</strong> Portugal’s capacity<br />

to complete <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial aid program set out by <strong>the</strong><br />

‘troika’ (<strong>the</strong> EU, <strong>the</strong> ECB, and <strong>the</strong> IMF) and applauded <strong>the</strong><br />
