BACKGROUND<br />
In 1981, Greece became an <strong>of</strong>ficial member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
EEC (now <strong>the</strong> EU), and <strong>in</strong> 2001 it became <strong>the</strong> twelfth member<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EMU. It is now considered to be <strong>the</strong> second-most<br />
corrupt member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EU. 1 S<strong>in</strong>ce 2008, Greece has been on<br />
<strong>the</strong> precipice <strong>of</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>ancial default. Greece’s unsusta<strong>in</strong>able<br />
fiscal policy – an overly generous welfare state, pervasive<br />
corruption and tax evasion – resulted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> market crisis<br />
<strong>the</strong> country is currently fac<strong>in</strong>g. Indeed, <strong>the</strong> prolonged economic<br />
turmoil <strong>in</strong> Greece played a significant role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> proliferation<br />
<strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial crises <strong>in</strong> Europe.<br />

media sources below: “Eurozone”, “economic crisis” and,<br />
“bailout”, and <strong>the</strong> results yielded thousands <strong>of</strong> articles, signify<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> prevalence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> topic.<br />

Kathimer<strong>in</strong>i (“Daily”) is a national daily Greek newspaper<br />
founded <strong>in</strong> 1988. The newspaper has its headquarters <strong>in</strong><br />
A<strong>the</strong>ns and is owned by <strong>the</strong> Alafouzos Publish<strong>in</strong>g Company.<br />
In 2011 its sales dom<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>the</strong> newspaper market with a<br />
75.62% share, and a monthly average <strong>of</strong> approximately one<br />
million newspaper sales. 2 It collaborated with <strong>the</strong> International<br />
Herald Tribune and delivers an English version to<br />
Greece and Cyprus. The newspaper is considered to be centre-right.<br />

To Vima (“The Tribune”) was launched <strong>in</strong> 1984 as a centreleft<br />
weekly <strong>in</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns. 4 Of <strong>the</strong> centre-left, it is closely associated<br />
with <strong>the</strong> PASOK political party, and <strong>the</strong>ir current<br />
leader and Greek Prime M<strong>in</strong>ister, Evangelos Venizelos. 5 It<br />
