RIDSDALE SPLITTING STRENGTH ACCESSORY (AFS)(for use with the Hand Operated Universal Sand Strength Machine)IGENERAL PRINCIPLESThis accessory for the Hand Operated Universal Sand Strength Machine (USSM) provides ameans of determining the splitting strength of an AFS Standard 2 inch diameter x 2 inchheight test specimen, which is a measure of its resistance to breaking under a compressionload applied perpendicular to the circumference of the specimen.IIDESCRIPTIONThe Splitting Strength Accessory consists of two test heads, one of which has a swivel armattached for the purpose of locating the test specimen prior to applying load.IIIINSTALLATIONAttach the test head with arm attached to the weight arm of the USSM, and the other testhead to the pusher arm of the USSM.IVTEST PROCEDUREPlace the AFS Standard 2 inch diameter x 2 inch height test specimen between the testheads with the arm in position to locate the specimen in such a way that load will be appliedperpendicular to its circumference. Slightly pre-load the specimen sufficient to retain it inposition, then swing the arm clear and apply load in the recommended manner (seeOperating Instructions for USSM) until the specimen collapses.The splitting strength is read directly in psi from the “Green Shear” scale of the USSM.103
