RIDSDALE-DIETERTTENSILE CORE STRENGTH ACCESSORY FOR USSM (AFS)IGENERAL PRINCIPLESThis accessory provides a means of uniformly pulling and breaking an AFS standard tensilespecimen of baked or cured core sand on the Universal Sand Strength Machine.IIDESCRIPTIONThese specially shaped aluminium alloy jaws with self-aligning contoured grips to hold thespecimen are used in the top test position of the Universal Sand Strength Machine. Theyare mounted on fulcrum pins attached to the machine by two cast iron brackets. Adjustablefulcrum screws bear in sockets in the fulcrum pins to allow self-alignment of the jaws.Guide pins line up the two halves of the accessory when in position on the machine andpermit easy introduction of the specimen.IIIINSTALLATION(a)(b)(c)(d)With the pusher arm and the pendulum weight arm in the perpendicular position, boltthe short bracket to the pusher arm using the long bolt.Raise the pusher arm and the pendulum weight arm to about the midway position onthe quadrant, pass the long bracket behind the pusher arm and bolt it to thependulum weight arm using the short bolt.Return the pusher arm and the pendulum weight arm to the perpendicular position,check that the fulcrum pins on the brackets are in line and tighten both bolts firmly.Place the jaws on the fulcrum pins with the guide pins in position.93
RIDSDALE-DIETERTTENSILE CORE STRENGTH ACCESSORY FOR USSM (AFS) (cont’d)IVTEST PROCEDURE(a)Insert a prepared AFS (1 inch thick central section) standard tensile specimen intothe jaws of the accessory as follows :-Raise the pendulum weight arm slightly, allowing the jaws to butt together, and placethe specimen carefully in position without scoring it.(b)Adjust the fulcrum screws so that a clearance of approximately 1 inch is obtainedbetween the rubber bumper on the pusher arm and the bottom lug on the pendulumweight arm.NOTE:After adjustment the jaws must be free to swivel on the end of the fulcrum screws.(c)(d)(e)REMOVE THE GUIDE PINS.Apply the load in the recommended manner until the specimen breaks.Read the “Dry Shear” scale and multiply the reading by 5 to give tensile strength inlb/in 2 .VRECOMMENDED SPARESPart NoDescription2901 Guide pin2902 Adjusting screw1906 Fulcrum pin.94
