RIDSDALE SPLITTING STRENGTH ACCESSORY (AFS)(for use with the Green Compression Strength Machine)IGENERAL PRINCIPLESThis accessory for the Green Compression Strength Machine (GCSM) provides a means ofdetermining the splitting strength of an AFS Standard 2 inch diameter x 2 inch height testspecimen, which is a measure of its resistance to breaking under a compression loadapplied perpendicular to the circumference of the specimen.IIDESCRIPTIONThe Splitting Strength Accessory consists of a specimen holder which has a swivel armattached for the purpose of locating the test specimen prior to applying load.IIIINSTALLATIONLocate the specimen holder on the lower compression head of the GCSM with the swivelarm in the vertical position.IVTEST PROCEDUREPlace the AFS Standard 2 inch diameter x 2 inch height test specimen in the specimenholder locating against the vertical swivel arm and the back stop so that the load from theGCSM will be applied perpendicular to the circumference of the specimen, then swing thearm clear and apply load in the recommended manner (see Operating Instructions forGCSM) until the specimen collapses.The splitting strength is read directly in psi from the GCSM scale.104
