RIDSDALE SHATTER INDEX TESTER (<strong>AFS</strong>) (cont’d)IIIINSTALLATION(a) Fit the ejector mechanism to the top of the steel tube, locate in position with the ¼”BSW bolt supplied and secure the clamp.(b)(c)(d)Place the bottom end of the steel tube in the hole in the base casting. Rotate thetube until the locating points line up with the tapped holes in the casting and securein position with the two set screws provided.Fit the sieve assembly on the machined ring in the base casting and place the anvilcap on top of the support.Set the machine on a solid floor. Remove the chromium plated dome nuts coveringthe two adjustable feet at the front of the base casting and level carefully by means ofthe adjustable feet using the spirit level on the base, or a plumb line. Lock the feet inposition with the dome nuts.IVTEST PROCEDURE(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)Prepare an <strong>AFS</strong> Standard 2 inch diameter specimen in a precision specimen tubeand record the weight of sand used to form the specimen.Position the tube containing the sand specimen in the ejector mechanism, beneaththe plunger, with the specimen in the lower part of the tube.Pull the handle of the mechanism downwards, slowly and evenly, so that the plungerenters the specimen tube and ejects the sand specimen without giving it anydownward impetus.The sand specimen should strike the anvil squarely in the centre. If it does not,check that the base is set level.Remove anvil cap, carefully lift off sieve assembly and remove sieve from pan.78
