RIDSDALE-DIETERTSAND SPECIFIC SURFACE TESTERPROCEDURE(1) Remove the unit from the packing case, place it on a work bench and level the tester baseusing the knurled screws (22), so that the level (053) bubble is centred.(2) The burette (6) and burette knurled screw (15), should be checked to ensure that the burettehas not loosened in shipment. The burette should be in contact with the screen at thebottom of the burette holder. Tighten the jam nut (17) by hand, so that the burette is heldfirmly in the rubber sleeve (13).(3) Place the valve handle in the “TEST” position and add kerosene to open left-hand levellingtube (8). Continue adding kerosene until the level in the right-hand volumetric tube (7)almost reaches the lower black marking on the right-hand tube. Allow the kerosene to drainfrom the sides of the tube for a few minutes before adding the last few drops to bring theliquid level up to the black marking.(4) Secure a representative sample of sand and remove the clay using the <strong>AFS</strong> Clay Contentprocedure. Wash enough sand so that sufficient clay-free sand will be left to use for a 50 gsample. Dry the sand sample at 105 °C, and weigh out a 50 g sample. Place the sand inthe burette, filling it as uniformly as possible to minimise segregation.16
