RIDSDALE-DIETERTMOTOR DRIVEN UNIVERSAL SAND STRENGTH MACHINE (AFS)IGENERAL PRINCIPLESThe Universal Sand Strength Machine, together with the appropriate accessories, willdetermine the compression, shear, tensile, transverse and splitting strengths of mouldingand core making materials by means of dead weight loading.IIDESCRIPTIONThis machine consists of four major parts: frame, pendulum weight, pusher arm and motor.The pusher arm is driven by a geared motor mounted on the pusher arm and coupled to thehandwheel shaft. The pendulum weight swings on ball bearings and can be moved by thepusher arm, via a test specimen, from a vertical position, through 90°, to a horizontalposition, with a consequent increase of load on the test specimen. A magnetic rider ismoved up a calibrated scale by the pendulum weight and indicates the point at whichspecimen collapse occurs. The machine is calibrated in lb/in 2 for 2 inch diameter x 2 inchheight standard sand specimens.86
