Barts Health Equality and Human Rights Impact Assessment Report8. Marriage and civil partnershipIn 2010, the ONS estimated that 48.9% of the over-16 population was married, 7.21% werewidowed, and 9.21% divorced. 23 In 2011, the ONS reported that the provisional number ofcivil partnerships in the UK in 2010 was 6,385, an increase of 1.9% since 2009. As relayedin section 6, there is no reliable figure for the number of LGB people in the country, whichmakes estimating the proportion of LGB people in civil partnerships tricky.Table 8a and 8b below show the marital status at time of the last census and number of civilpartnerships (2006-8) respectively.Figure 8a: Marital status by borough, 2001Newham Tower Waltham London EnglandHamlets ForestAll People 243891 196106 218341 7172091 49138831Single (never married) 138326 117089 118017 3808066 21763102Married (first marriage) 67909 51162 63364 2138738 17069491Re-married 5842 3841 7162 247533 2885186Separated (but still legally7357 4866 5344 167760 941911married)Divorced 12750 9912 12737 423736 3219984Widowed 11707 9236 11717 386258 3259157Source: ONS, Census 2001Figure 8b: No of civil partnerships in borough, 2006-082006 2007 2008 pTotal Male Female Total Male Female Total Male FemaleNewham 53 38 15 39 30 9 23 18 5Tower136 123 13 74 62 12 62 53 9HamletsWaltham 90 53 37 53 33 20 38 16 22ForestLondon 4,019 3,058 961 2,110 1,545 565 1,729 1,271 458Source: ONS, 2009 taken from GLA datastore9.
