Those hills are unique, <strong>and</strong> I have neverseen any so lovely elsewhere—a m<strong>in</strong>iature mounta<strong>in</strong>range of most <strong>gr</strong>aceful forms, <strong>and</strong> of auniform hue of emerald, so rare a colour <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>Cyclades. The <strong>gr</strong>ass slopes end <strong>in</strong> p<strong>in</strong>nacles ofvivid <strong>gr</strong>een rock. It was twilight as we came to<strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> night when we passed <strong>the</strong> founta<strong>in</strong>which bears <strong>the</strong> name of Ariadne, outside <strong>the</strong>gates of Naxia.
