orig<strong>in</strong>. 1THE GREEK MAINLAND 3This people forms <strong>the</strong> backbone of rural<strong>Greece</strong>, for your true Greek will not till <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>if he can earn a liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r way. He is<strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ctively a townsman <strong>and</strong> a trader. TheAlbanian is a farmer, <strong>and</strong> consider<strong>in</strong>g that 70 percent of <strong>the</strong> exports of <strong>Greece</strong> consists of l<strong>and</strong>produce, it must be allowed that he is a veryvaluable asset to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom.By far <strong>the</strong> largest <strong>gr</strong>a<strong>in</strong>-<strong>gr</strong>ow<strong>in</strong>g district <strong>in</strong><strong>Greece</strong> is <strong>the</strong> Thessalian pla<strong>in</strong>, which was a lakeuntil <strong>the</strong> defile of Tempe was cloven betweenOssa <strong>and</strong> Olympus by a seismic cataclysm whichlet <strong>the</strong> water out. The ancient myth attributed<strong>the</strong> cleft to <strong>the</strong> trident of Neptune, but it wasVulcan who accomplished <strong>the</strong> task. The Toskhs are <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Albanians, whose nor<strong>the</strong>rn limit may be assigned to <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood of<strong>the</strong> River Skumbi. They differ materially from <strong>the</strong> Ghegs orNor<strong>the</strong>rn Albanians. The latter are divided <strong>in</strong>to tribes, <strong>the</strong>Toskhs are not. When <strong>the</strong> Gheg is a Christian, he is a RomanCatholic, whilst <strong>the</strong> Toskh is Orthodox. Greek <strong>in</strong>fluence hasmoulded <strong>the</strong> Toskhs for centuries, <strong>and</strong> a Toskh, even <strong>in</strong> Turkishterritory, resembles a Greek more than he does his Gheg compatriot, whose chief occupation is fight<strong>in</strong>g. When not thusengaged his condition is that of armed idleness. The differenceextends even to <strong>the</strong> dress ; <strong>the</strong> Albanian costume adopted by <strong>the</strong><strong>Greeks</strong>, whose dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g feature is <strong>the</strong> fustanella, <strong>the</strong> manypleatedwhite kilt, is Toskh. The fustanella is unknown among<strong>the</strong> Ghegs. It is difficult to draw a l<strong>in</strong>e of demarcation between<strong>Greeks</strong> <strong>and</strong> Toskhs <strong>in</strong> North-Western <strong>Greece</strong>. But <strong>the</strong> divisionbetween Toskhs <strong>and</strong> Ghegs far<strong>the</strong>r north is as sharp asbetween two different nations.
