At least, <strong>the</strong>ymanage to learn <strong>the</strong>ir contents <strong>and</strong> proclaimwhat <strong>the</strong>y judge to be <strong>the</strong> most attractive items.If any news of assumed importance arrives,<strong>the</strong>papers issue supplements, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> boys are letloose aga<strong>in</strong>, career<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> streets withshrill cries of " Pardtima." " All <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ners," <strong>the</strong>stereotyped rubric of <strong>the</strong> London newsboy, hasno place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir vocabulary. The <strong>in</strong>terest ispurely political. Sport<strong>in</strong>g events, which occupyso large a space <strong>in</strong> our halfpenny even<strong>in</strong>g papers,have no place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir A<strong>the</strong>nian contemporaries.The debates <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chamber <strong>and</strong> party moves,with comments <strong>the</strong>reupon, come first. Everyth<strong>in</strong>gwhich transpires abroad that has any bear<strong>in</strong>gon <strong>Greece</strong> is carefully chronicled. The utterancesof European statesmen concern<strong>in</strong>g Greekquestions are reported <strong>in</strong> full, <strong>and</strong> are often made<strong>the</strong> subject of a lead<strong>in</strong>g article. There is littlecourt news <strong>and</strong> no " society " gossip. A columnis devoted to current events <strong>in</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns, <strong>and</strong>ano<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> world outside. The typo<strong>gr</strong>aphy<strong>and</strong> get-up of <strong>the</strong> papers is generally good, <strong>and</strong>nearly all of <strong>the</strong>m are copiously illustrated. Advertisementsare few <strong>and</strong> rates low, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> largestcirculation probably does not exceed 15,000, sothat special cables are rare.
