26 HOME LIFE IN HELLASmeridional luxuriance is <strong>in</strong>truded a nor<strong>the</strong>rn note.Not far from Mavromati, <strong>the</strong> ancient Messene,where <strong>the</strong> River Leukasia jo<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> Mavrozumenos,<strong>the</strong>re is a bridge that recalls <strong>the</strong> triplebridge near Crowl<strong>and</strong> Abbey.From two piers <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> centre, arches lead <strong>in</strong> three different directionsto <strong>the</strong> three po<strong>in</strong>ts of l<strong>and</strong> formed by <strong>the</strong> confluence.Ru<strong>in</strong>ed castles, <strong>the</strong> strongholds of Frankishbarons, crown <strong>the</strong> heights, not only at Coron, atModon, <strong>and</strong> at Navar<strong>in</strong>o, but on many an <strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>crest. Most impos<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>se is Karytenia, on astupendous crag washed on three sides by <strong>the</strong>Alphaeus. Karytenia, which is <strong>in</strong> a tolerablestate of preservation, was built by Hugh deBrienne, one of that famous house which numberedamong its scions three Constables of France,a K<strong>in</strong>g of Jerusalem,an Emperor of Constant<strong>in</strong>ople,<strong>and</strong> two Dukes of A<strong>the</strong>ns, <strong>the</strong> last survivorof which fell at <strong>the</strong> battle of Poitiers.Karyteniahas memories of later times, for it was successfullyheld by Kolokotrones aga<strong>in</strong>st Ibrahim Pasha dur<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> War of Independence. It is a fitt<strong>in</strong>geyrie both for <strong>the</strong> freeboot<strong>in</strong>g barons of <strong>the</strong> MiddleAges <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> old Klepht chiefta<strong>in</strong> who is one of<strong>the</strong> heroes of n<strong>in</strong>eteenth-century <strong>Greece</strong>. Forhere we are <strong>in</strong> Arcadia, <strong>the</strong> region whose namehas become a symbol for rural <strong>in</strong>nocence <strong>and</strong>peace. These riven peaks, deep gorges, sombreforests, <strong>and</strong> beetl<strong>in</strong>g cliffshardly make a sett<strong>in</strong>gfor <strong>the</strong> sentimental shepherds <strong>and</strong> shepherdessesof Watteau phil<strong>and</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g on smooth-shaven lawns,
