318 HOME LIFE IN HELLASless noise, <strong>and</strong> more space, <strong>and</strong>, above all, <strong>the</strong>re is<strong>the</strong> "most pellucid air" of Euripides. Even <strong>the</strong>white hot silence of a summer noon isnot oppressive. The nerve-shatter<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>in</strong> which is rapidlymak<strong>in</strong>g London un<strong>in</strong>habitable has not <strong>in</strong>vadedA<strong>the</strong>ns. The tramways are not noisy. The onlyo<strong>the</strong>r public conveyance is a very light <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>ytwo-horse bus—a really admirable vehicle. Happily,A<strong>the</strong>ns is still Oriental enough not to be <strong>in</strong> ahurry, even when it is at work. No wonder centenariansare numerous <strong>in</strong> <strong>Greece</strong>.Here is <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of an A<strong>the</strong>nian day.Theprofile of Lycabettus is still dark aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>geast when <strong>the</strong>re comes <strong>the</strong> t<strong>in</strong>kle of bells. We know <strong>the</strong>y are borne by goats by <strong>the</strong> dull, muted sound. The timbre of <strong>the</strong> goat-bell is <strong>the</strong>same everywhere. It is unmistakable, differ<strong>in</strong>galike from <strong>the</strong> fuller tone of <strong>the</strong> sheep-bell <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>sharp j<strong>in</strong>gle of <strong>the</strong> mule-bells. The t<strong>in</strong>kle is followedby <strong>the</strong> cry of Gala, galata (milk), <strong>and</strong> a tallfigure <strong>in</strong> fustanella seizes one of his charges by<strong>the</strong> leg <strong>and</strong> draws from her <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g supplyfor <strong>the</strong> household of <strong>the</strong> civil servant opposite. The stentorian tones of <strong>the</strong> goat-herd are quicklyfollowed by <strong>the</strong> shrill treble of Loostro-verneekifrom <strong>the</strong> throat of a dim<strong>in</strong>utive shoe-black go<strong>in</strong>ghis round. He has his regular customers, but hedoes not mean to lose a chance one for want ofadvertis<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> he has his reward. A coupleof pair of boots are thrown out, <strong>and</strong> he unsl<strong>in</strong>gshis box <strong>and</strong> sets to work on <strong>the</strong> doorstep.
