The series issued by <strong>the</strong> Societyfor <strong>the</strong> Diffusion of Useful Books consists ofvolumes cost<strong>in</strong>g fourpence each, some of <strong>the</strong>madmirably written, <strong>and</strong> all of <strong>the</strong>m educative <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> best sense of <strong>the</strong> term.There is an excellentChildren's Library, which <strong>in</strong>cludes translations ofchildren's classics, such as Hans Andersen. TheMarasle Library, which derives its name from awealthy Greek who orig<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>and</strong> endowed it,has for its object <strong>the</strong> publication of works oforig<strong>in</strong>al merit <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> translation of st<strong>and</strong>ardauthors. Macaulay is <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> series.Among books <strong>in</strong> foreign languages those <strong>in</strong>French predom<strong>in</strong>ate. One sees <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bookshopsfrequented by University men a spr<strong>in</strong>kl<strong>in</strong>g ofscientific works <strong>in</strong> German. Dumas, Victor Hugo, <strong>and</strong>Jules Verne seem to be <strong>the</strong> most popular Frenchwriters <strong>in</strong> translations.
