When afterwards,at Santor<strong>in</strong>, we saw Scaros, <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>edstronghold, an eyrie on <strong>the</strong>edge of a precipice,built by <strong>the</strong> first Barozzi, who came with <strong>the</strong>Fourth Crusade, we thought of his descendant,our good friend at Naxos, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> strangeromance of a later age <strong>in</strong>terwoven with <strong>the</strong>seJEgean isles, apart from <strong>the</strong>ir ancient glory. Butthis br<strong>in</strong>gs us to Santor<strong>in</strong>.SANTORINThe lip of a submerged crater, still active—thatis <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> of Santor<strong>in</strong>. A crescent-shaped massof volcanic matter, it tapers to a po<strong>in</strong>t at eachend, <strong>and</strong> isbarely three miles wide <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle.It is eighteen miles long on <strong>the</strong> outer arc, twelveon <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner. The approach to Santor<strong>in</strong> is asight never forgotten. The nor<strong>the</strong>rn tip of <strong>the</strong>crescent falls to <strong>the</strong> sea on each side <strong>in</strong> sheercliffs of burnt tufa, crimson <strong>in</strong> hue. At <strong>the</strong> topis a layer of white, like <strong>the</strong> sugared crust on acut bridecake. When that white crust resolvesitself <strong>in</strong>to houses we rub our eyes. Surely it issome dream city, this eyrie of domes <strong>and</strong> dwell<strong>in</strong>gs,roof above roof, crowd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> narrowsummit of <strong>the</strong> razor-edged promontory, cl<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>glike mart<strong>in</strong>s' nests to <strong>the</strong> cornice of <strong>the</strong> precipice.Such is <strong>the</strong> first view of Epanomeria, <strong>the</strong> secondtown of Santor<strong>in</strong>. We round <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t, open<strong>in</strong>gup <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner side of <strong>the</strong> crescent. About half-
