it.DOMESTIC LIFE 171With us, <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>and</strong> <strong>gr</strong>adual <strong>gr</strong>owth of<strong>the</strong> environment which we call home is one of<strong>the</strong> <strong>gr</strong>eatest pleasures <strong>in</strong> <strong>life</strong>. It possesses no<strong>in</strong>terest for <strong>the</strong> Greek. Indeed, it has no place<strong>in</strong> his scheme of existence. The impos<strong>in</strong>g facadesof A<strong>the</strong>nian houses conceal, for <strong>the</strong> most part,a bare <strong>and</strong> comfortless <strong>in</strong>terior, <strong>and</strong> a well-keptgarden is rare. The reason is not far to seek.A garden is not made <strong>in</strong> a year, <strong>and</strong> a personwho changes his residence every twelve monthsdoes not want to be troubled with much furniture,nor is he particular as to its arrangement, see<strong>in</strong>gthat it will be carted away <strong>in</strong> a few months. Ofcourse <strong>in</strong>stances may be cited to <strong>the</strong> contrary, <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong>re are delightful homes <strong>in</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns. But <strong>the</strong>yare <strong>the</strong> exception, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y belong <strong>in</strong> nearly everycase to people who have lived many years <strong>in</strong>Western Europe, or who come from Hellenicl<strong>and</strong>s outside <strong>Greece</strong>. Next door to <strong>the</strong> house <strong>in</strong>which <strong>the</strong>se words are be<strong>in</strong>g written dwells a professorof <strong>the</strong> University. He does not possessa foot of garden <strong>gr</strong>ound, yet he has turned hiscourtyard <strong>and</strong> exterior stairway <strong>in</strong>to a bower ofclimb<strong>in</strong>g plants, <strong>and</strong> his<strong>the</strong> more brilliantflowery w<strong>in</strong>dows are all<strong>in</strong> contrast with <strong>the</strong> blank casementson ei<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>. He. does not occupy hishouse merely, but lives <strong>in</strong> it. But he is a nativeof Samos, <strong>and</strong> his taste for flowers is derived from<strong>the</strong> Turks, though perhaps he would not admitit. The forego<strong>in</strong>g remarks apply chiefly to <strong>the</strong><strong>Greeks</strong> of A<strong>the</strong>ns <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> larger towns.
