The latter ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>that <strong>the</strong> so-called " restored " language is a purelyartificial concoction, an <strong>in</strong>con<strong>gr</strong>uous mixture, notpartak<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> antique spirit, but of Orientalpedantry. Those who use it th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>y are revert<strong>in</strong>gto Xenophon, but <strong>in</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g so <strong>the</strong>y showthat <strong>the</strong>y have not escaped yet from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenceof <strong>the</strong> Turk. A true imitation of <strong>the</strong> ancientswould be to produce modern th<strong>in</strong>gs as <strong>the</strong>y did.Popular Greek is a development along <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>esfollowed by <strong>the</strong> Romance tongues from Lat<strong>in</strong>.
