It isone of <strong>the</strong> snuggest, <strong>and</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ly one of <strong>the</strong>most beautiful harbours <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. We l<strong>and</strong>on a well-made quay, with an excellent roadwayrunn<strong>in</strong>g round <strong>the</strong> port—a relic of <strong>the</strong> Britishoccupation.An Englishman will not have much trouble<strong>in</strong> Ithaca with regard to language. English isalmost as much <strong>the</strong> common tongue of <strong>the</strong> sea asFrench is of diplomacy, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ithacans, like<strong>the</strong> Companions of Ulysses, are seafarers. The<strong>Greeks</strong> are boatmen, but not as a rule deep-seasailors. These latter only come from certa<strong>in</strong>spots ; Andros is one, Ithaca is ano<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>Ithacans have <strong>the</strong> genu<strong>in</strong>e salt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir blood.The little isl<strong>and</strong> owns a goodly number ofsteamers. They come to Vathy once only, tobe registered, <strong>the</strong>n trade all over <strong>the</strong> world, butma<strong>in</strong>ly to British ports. They are comm<strong>and</strong>ed,officered, <strong>and</strong> manned exclusively by Ithacans,who furnish more seamen than <strong>the</strong>y require, <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> surplus sail <strong>in</strong> British ships. But all arefaithful to Ithaca, <strong>and</strong> between those who haveretired <strong>and</strong> those who are hav<strong>in</strong>g a spell ashore,<strong>the</strong>re is always a cont<strong>in</strong>gent at Vathy who hail anEnglishman with delight. They are familiar withhim on <strong>the</strong> Thames, <strong>the</strong> Mersey, or <strong>the</strong> Hooghly.They have often met him on <strong>the</strong> Apollo Bunderat Bombay or <strong>the</strong> Circular Quay at Sydney, but
