Yet Ma<strong>in</strong>a isconservative, as it has always been. It rema<strong>in</strong>edpagan until nearly <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>th century,<strong>and</strong> to-day presents aspects of a primitivestate of society. Ma<strong>in</strong>a is <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al home of<strong>the</strong> blood feud, which it is supposed to have <strong>in</strong>troducedto Corsica as <strong>the</strong> vendetta. The Ma<strong>in</strong>otecolony which settled <strong>in</strong> that isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1673 stillexists at Cargese. The vendetta survives <strong>in</strong> spiteof <strong>the</strong> law, though to noth<strong>in</strong>g like <strong>the</strong> same extentas when, sometimes for twenty years, familieswere atfeud, <strong>and</strong> reconciliation only came aboutafter many members on both sides had fallen.Some of <strong>the</strong> loopholed tower dwell<strong>in</strong>gs, whichwere a necessity <strong>in</strong> those days, still exist. Theentrance is reached only by a ladder, which <strong>in</strong>case of feud was always drawn up. The womenonly left <strong>the</strong> dwell<strong>in</strong>g, for accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> law ofvendetta <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>in</strong>violable, as are <strong>the</strong> guests.A person whose <strong>life</strong> is sought goes sca<strong>the</strong>less ifhe accompanies a guest. The Ma<strong>in</strong>ote scrupulouslyobserves <strong>the</strong> rules of <strong>the</strong> game, <strong>and</strong>holds <strong>the</strong> common assass<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> supreme contempt.Outside <strong>the</strong> bounds of Ma<strong>in</strong>a <strong>the</strong> feud ceases, <strong>and</strong>no self-respect<strong>in</strong>g Ma<strong>in</strong>ote would attack a foebeyond its borders.For, whatever may be thoughtof <strong>the</strong> practice, it has its chivalrous side.Treachery is abhorred, <strong>and</strong> due notice must begiven of <strong>in</strong>tention to attempt <strong>the</strong> <strong>life</strong> of a foe.
