204 HOME LIFE IN HELLASwhich <strong>the</strong> country has suffered po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rway.The long Roman subjection, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vasionsof Avar, Slav, <strong>and</strong> Norman, <strong>the</strong> Frankish dom<strong>in</strong>ationof more than two <strong>and</strong> a half centuries, <strong>the</strong>Venetian conquests, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Turkish rule ofnearly four hundred years cannot but have leftsome traces. To <strong>the</strong>se must be added <strong>the</strong> manyimmi<strong>gr</strong>ations <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>trusions of a peaceful character.In 1397, long before <strong>the</strong> Turkish Conquest,Anatolian Turks settled <strong>in</strong> considerable numbers<strong>in</strong> Thessaly, <strong>and</strong> early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g centuryabout six thous<strong>and</strong> families came to augment <strong>the</strong>colony. These people were known as Koniarides,from Konia, <strong>the</strong> ancient Iconium, <strong>the</strong>ir place oforig<strong>in</strong>. About <strong>the</strong> same period <strong>the</strong>re was an<strong>in</strong>flux of Yuruks, <strong>the</strong> pastoral nomads of Turkishrace who are still to be met with on <strong>the</strong> upl<strong>and</strong>sof Asia M<strong>in</strong>or. A little later Mohamed IIdivided large districts <strong>in</strong>to military fiefs <strong>gr</strong>anted toTurks who had served him <strong>and</strong> his predecessors.Not so long ago, two Turks, l<strong>and</strong>owners ofThessaly, sat as members of <strong>the</strong> Greek Parliament.It may be urged that <strong>the</strong> progeny of Greek<strong>in</strong>termarriage with Turks rema<strong>in</strong>ed Mohammedans,dist<strong>in</strong>ct from <strong>the</strong> Greek population, but<strong>the</strong>re must have been some leakage. There were,<strong>and</strong> probably still are, a score of families <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>deme of Boeae, <strong>and</strong> a whole village near Kastania,speak<strong>in</strong>g Greek <strong>and</strong> devout Christians, who areknown to be descendants of Turks converteddur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> revolution of 1821.
