292 HOME LIFE IN HELLASnever free from malaria <strong>and</strong> it is frequently shakenby earthquakes. In 1858 it was destroyed almostentirely. A<strong>the</strong>ns, on <strong>the</strong> contrary, is one of <strong>the</strong>healthiest spots <strong>in</strong> <strong>Greece</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> a l<strong>and</strong> whichcounts, on an average, n<strong>in</strong>ety-four earthquakedays <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year, it enjoys a remarkable immunityfrom disaster. The shocks with which it is visitedoccasionally are rarely violent enough to causedamage. Sentiment had <strong>the</strong> largest share <strong>in</strong>choos<strong>in</strong>g it as <strong>the</strong> capital, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se respects<strong>the</strong> choice was happy. The arid character of <strong>the</strong>Attic pla<strong>in</strong> was commented on by P<strong>in</strong>dar <strong>and</strong>Thucydides, <strong>and</strong> no doubt by o<strong>the</strong>rs before <strong>the</strong>m.Certa<strong>in</strong>ly it has come <strong>in</strong> for animadversion evers<strong>in</strong>ce. The "chorus of hills" which bound it onevery side but that open to <strong>the</strong> sea are not highenough to hold <strong>the</strong> clouds, but, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>,<strong>the</strong>y are low enough to admit <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn breezes, which temper <strong>the</strong> summer heat. The th<strong>in</strong>, transparentatmosphere renders a high temperaturemuch more tolerable than <strong>in</strong> a damp climate.Between <strong>the</strong> hours of n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> five on a summerday, <strong>the</strong> pavements of A<strong>the</strong>ns scorch <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>reflection from <strong>the</strong> white walls bl<strong>in</strong>ds, but <strong>the</strong> heatis never what is termed stifl<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> it is alwayspleasant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shade. In <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, when <strong>the</strong>sky is rosy beh<strong>in</strong>d Hymettus, before <strong>the</strong> sun haspumped up <strong>the</strong> dewy coolness of <strong>the</strong> night, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g, when he s<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>in</strong> vaporous goldbeh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> ranges of <strong>the</strong> Peloponnesus, one istempted to say <strong>the</strong>re is no climate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world
