58 HOME LIFE IN HELLASof <strong>Greece</strong>.The Angev<strong>in</strong>s firmly established <strong>the</strong>feudalism of <strong>the</strong> Normans, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Venetians confirmedit whilst suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> baronies to lapse.They were lavish, however, <strong>in</strong> conferr<strong>in</strong>g patentsof nobility. In 1672 no fewer than 112 noblefamilies were <strong>in</strong>scribed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Liber Aureus.They purposely kept <strong>the</strong> people ignorant, leav<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong>m without schools, whilst <strong>the</strong>y allowed <strong>the</strong>Ionian youth <strong>the</strong> privilege of tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir de<strong>gr</strong>eesat Padua without exam<strong>in</strong>ation. Residence wascompulsory, so that <strong>the</strong> wealthy class wereItalianised with <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum of education. But<strong>in</strong> spite of Italian <strong>in</strong>fluence, Hellenism, ever<strong>in</strong>domitable, asserted itself. The Turkish conquestof Constant<strong>in</strong>ople stimulated it by <strong>the</strong><strong>in</strong>flux of refugees. Thus came <strong>the</strong> Theotokisfamily, which is still <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> front rank of <strong>in</strong>tellectual<strong>Greece</strong>. Thus came Phrantzes, <strong>the</strong>historian. The revival of <strong>the</strong> Greek languagehad its fount <strong>in</strong> Corfu, <strong>and</strong> its sponsors were <strong>the</strong>ancestors of <strong>the</strong> Bulgaris <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Theotokis, whoare prom<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>in</strong> contemporary Hellenic politics.The Ionians are <strong>the</strong> only <strong>Greeks</strong> who own an aristocracy,<strong>the</strong> creation of <strong>the</strong> Angev<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Venice.No titles are acknowledged <strong>in</strong> <strong>Greece</strong>, but <strong>the</strong>yare still borne <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>s. Corfu is <strong>the</strong> onlyportion of<strong>the</strong> Greek dom<strong>in</strong>ions that was neverunder Turkish rule. Zante suffered it for a fewyears, from 1479 to 1482, Cephalonia for twelveyears longer.Santa Maura has seen more of <strong>the</strong>Turks, who held it for two centuries, from 1479
