Some thought <strong>the</strong> choice was not a wiseone.importance.Patras was a place of far <strong>gr</strong>eater wealth <strong>and</strong>It had long ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed commercialrelations with Europe, it was <strong>in</strong> touch with <strong>the</strong>civilisation of <strong>the</strong> Ionian Isl<strong>and</strong>s, it was a seaport,<strong>and</strong> beh<strong>in</strong>d it <strong>and</strong> on ei<strong>the</strong>r side lay <strong>the</strong> mostfertile region of <strong>Greece</strong>. Cor<strong>in</strong>th had its advocates,<strong>and</strong> its geo<strong>gr</strong>aphical position certa<strong>in</strong>lyseemedto mark it out as <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong>k<strong>in</strong>gdom. It comm<strong>and</strong>s <strong>the</strong> traffic between <strong>the</strong>north <strong>and</strong> south through itsnarrow isthmus, <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> two seas make it <strong>the</strong> natural place of exportfor both east <strong>and</strong> west.
