9 Installation9.2 Design of installation rooms9.2.1 Combustion air supplyInstallation rooms and gas/oil boiler installations shouldmeet the conditions specified by the relevant national, regional or local regulations and must comply with therelevant Fire Regulations. For open flue combustion equipment with a total ratedheating output in excess of 50 kW, the combustion airsupply is deemed to be ensured if an aperture to theoutside with a clear opening of at least 150 cm 2 (plus2cm 2 for every kilowatt above 50 kW rated heatingoutput) is provided. The required cross-section may besplit over a maximum of two lines and must be sized toprovide the equivalent air flow rate.Fundamental requirements• Combustion air vents and lines must never be closedor covered if appropriate safety equipment cannotensure that the combustion equipment can onlyoperate when the flow cross-section is free.• The required cross-section must not be restricted by aclosure or grille.• An adequate supply of combustion air can also beverified by other means.• Special requirements must be followed for LPGcombustion equipment.9.2.2 Siting combustion equipmentGas combustion equipment with a total rated heatingoutput in excess of 100 kW may only be installed inrooms:• that are not used for any other purpose• that have no opening towards other rooms, except doors• the doors of which are tight and self-closing or• that can be ventilated.Burners and fuel supply devices to the combustionequipment must be able to be shut down at any time by aswitch (emergency stop switch) located outside theinstallation room. A sign reading “EMERGENCY STOPSWITCH-COMBUSTION” must be placed next to theemergency stop switch.Notwithstanding these rules, combustion equipmentmay also be installed in other rooms, if:• the use of these rooms makes this necessary and thecombustion equipment can be operated safely or• the rooms are in freestanding buildings that only serveto operate the combustion equipment and store thefuel.Open flue combustion equipment must not be installed:• in stairwells, except in residential buildings with nomore than two apartments• in generally accessible hallways that serve as escaperoutes or• in garages.Rooms with systems that extract airOpen flue combustion equipment may only be installed inrooms equipped with systems that extract air subject tothe following conditions:• simultaneous operation of the combustion equipmentand the air extractor systems will be prevented bysafety equipment• the flue gas routing will be monitored by appropriatesafety equipment or• flue gas will be routed via the air extractor systems orit will be ensured that such systems cannot createdangerous negative pressure.Thermally activated shut-off deviceGas combustion equipment in rooms or the fuel linedirectly upstream of such equipment must be fitted witha thermally activated gas shut-off device (TAE)( page 90).76Technical guide Floor standing gas/oil condensing boilers Logano plus SB315, SB615, SB745 – 6 720 802 589 (2012/01)
