2003 - Annual Report - <strong>EDP</strong><br />

In April the Portuguese government publicly announced<br />

that <strong>EDP</strong> would handle the distribution <strong>business</strong> of both<br />

gas and electricity within the scope of the domestic<br />

energy restructuring <strong>plan</strong>.<br />

In third place, greater clarification of the electricity<br />

sector liberalisation processes, particularly the guarantee<br />

that the financial balance inherent in the present Energy<br />

Acquisition Contracts (CAEs) would be maintained after<br />

these contracts come to an end, and the creation of<br />

MIBEL drove investor expectations regarding the<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance of the company.<br />

On the other hand, in the wake of <strong>EDP</strong>’s proposal that<br />

the effect of the inherent cost to the Human Resources<br />

Rationalisation Plan (PPRH) be incorporated into the<br />

electricity tariffs, the Energy Services Regulator decided<br />

in August to agree that the costs inherent in the PPRH<br />

2003-04 could be carried as an investment and written<br />

off over a period of 20 years.<br />

Towards the end of September, <strong>EDP</strong> implemented the<br />

decision that it had previously announced of selling its<br />

3% stake in Iberdrola.<br />

Lastly, <strong>EDP</strong>’s strategic objectives set out by the<br />

Executive Committee <strong>for</strong> the three-year period from<br />

<strong>2004</strong> to 2006 were presented to financial analysts and<br />

institutional investors in London in December.<br />
