Shaun Kennedy is director of the <strong>National</strong> Center for <strong>Food</strong>Protection and Defense, a department of Homeland <strong>Security</strong>Center of Excellence. He is also the director of Partnershipsand External Relations of the University of Minnesota’s Collegeof Veterinary Medicine and an assistant professor in theDepartment of Veterinary Population Medicine. In recognition of his leadershipin research and graduate-education programs on animal health, food safety, andfood-system defense, Mr. Kennedy received the Commissioner of the <strong>Food</strong> andDrug Administration Citation for advancing food defense. He provided the inaugurallecture in the FDA’s Chief Scientist Lecture series and has served on severalEuropean Commission projects on food-system protection, among others.Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, Kennedy held executive positionsin Procter & Gamble and Ecolab. At Ecolab, he was vice president of global foodand beverage research and development, leading his organization in developing awide range of animal-health and food-safety technologies. These included novelsanitizers, FDA-approved process additives, new sanitation technologies, andanimal-health products. Prior to this, he was director of strategic and emergingtechnologies at Ecolab, guiding internal and outsourced technology programs.At Procter & Gamble his positions included assignments in Japan and China,leading research and development teams and global programs.208 <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Security</strong>: The Intersection of Sustainability, Safety and Defense
